Oil and Gas – VR Safety Training Platform

Comprehensive Summary

The UniKL MITEC Oil & Gas VR Simulator is a Unity-based immersive training platform developed by Sagar and Tahmid for Solution Group on behalf of UniKL MITEC, delivering gamified, risk-free safety training for offshore oil and gas personnel. The demo build covers two core modules — Module 1 (Safety Protocol & Equipment), which guides trainees through a locker room environment where they must correctly select PPE, verify compliance via an in-world mirror mechanic, and receive authority to proceed; and Module 3(c) (Drilling & Production — Gas Leak Explosion), which places trainees on a night-time offshore rig where they must identify a gas leak using a portable detection device, isolate the source by operating a shut-off valve, and evacuate to a muster point under time pressure. All 3D environments, character avatars, animations, particle effects, UI systems, and interaction logic were fully built and integrated by the development team, with assets sourced from licensed libraries and extensively modified to meet offshore context requirements. The platform features a real-time PPE mirror reflection system, green floor marker navigation, task instruction boards, and progression gating that enforces correct procedural order — establishing a scalable, production-ready foundation for the full multi-module simulator suite.

Project Justification

The oil and gas industry operates within one of the most hazardous working environments in the world, where procedural errors, inadequate PPE compliance, and delayed emergency response can result in catastrophic consequences — including fatalities, environmental disasters, and significant operational losses. Traditional safety training methods, which rely heavily on classroom instruction, printed manuals, and infrequent physical drills, fall critically short in preparing personnel for the high-pressure, time-sensitive realities of offshore emergencies. Trainees are expected to retain complex procedural knowledge and apply it instinctively under stress, yet conventional approaches offer little opportunity for repeated, consequence-free practice in realistic operational contexts.

The UniKL MITEC O&G VR Simulator was developed to directly address this gap by delivering an immersive, interactive training experience that places personnel inside a fully realised virtual offshore environment before they ever set foot on a real platform. By simulating critical workflows — from PPE selection and self-inspection through to gas leak identification, valve isolation, and emergency evacuation — the platform enables trainees to internalise correct procedures through active, embodied learning rather than passive instruction. The inclusion of progression gating, real-time avatar feedback, and task-based scoring ensures that trainees cannot advance without demonstrating procedural competency, reinforcing both knowledge retention and behavioural compliance in a way that no manual or classroom exercise can replicate.

Objectives

  1. To design and develop an immersive, Unity-based VR training simulator that replicates realistic offshore oil and gas environments, enabling personnel to undergo safety training in a risk-free, consequence-free virtual setting.
  2. To implement a procedurally-gated PPE selection and compliance system — including an in-world mirror self-inspection mechanic — that enforces correct equipment selection and validates trainee readiness before progression to hazardous work zones.
  3. To simulate high-stakes offshore emergency response scenarios, specifically gas leak identification, shut-off valve isolation, and muster point evacuation, complete with time pressure mechanics and failure states that replicate real operational conditions.
  4. To develop a gamified task-based progression system with scoring, navigation cues, and real-time avatar feedback that reinforces correct procedural behaviour and measurable trainee competency throughout each module.
  5. To establish a scalable, production-ready demo build covering Modules 1 and 3(c) that serves as a validated technical foundation for the full multi-module simulator suite, with documented next steps for voice-over narration, telemetry logging, and VR HMD optimisation.

Evaluation Metrics

The simulator evaluates trainee performance across three core competency areas: procedural compliance, task completion, and emergency response efficiency. Progression gating ensures trainees cannot advance without correctly completing each step — from selecting the full PPE set and passing the mirror self-inspection, to confirming the gas leak with the detection device before isolating the valve. Performance is tracked through a scoring system that records key interaction events, with failure states triggered for PPE non-compliance, incorrect procedural order, and evacuation time limit breaches — providing trainers with measurable, objective data on each trainee’s readiness and competency.
