Shaping Tomorrow’s Creative Technologists
The APU XR Studio serves as an XR/Spatial Computing laboratory, designed for shared and collaborative education experiences that excite, inspire and stimulate. Students will learn the skill sets required to design compelling stories through the values of spatial computing. With the integration of multiple disciplines, the skills of students are honed – technically and creatively, to ultimate generate high value creative technologists for the new digital paradigm.
HISTORY
Pioneering XR Education and Innovation in Malaysia
In June 2020, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) made history by teaming up with Ministry XR Malaysia to pioneer XR technology integration in education.
APU XR Studio, unveiled in early June at Level 4, APU Campus, is a dedicated hub for students pursuing Multimedia Technology for Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The collaboration transformed a conventional IT lab into an immersive learning center, equipped with cutting-edge tech like volumetric video capture stations and Microsoft HoloLens smart glasses.
The studio birthed a fascinating XR project, “Wonders of the World,” showcasing the potential of the technology through an engaging journey exploring landmarks like the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids. Interns from the Games and Animation program were involved, gaining valuable experience for their future endeavors.
Spearheaded by APU’s Chief Innovation Officer, Prof. Dr. Ir. Vinesh A/L Thiruchelvam, and Multimedia lecturer Dr. Siti Azreena Mubin, this initiative is a stepping stone toward nurturing a new generation of XR-savvy professionals, shaping the digital landscape.
With the successful XR Studio launch, APU aims to inspire similar ventures in other educational institutions as the XR industry continues to burgeon, offering promising career prospects.

Virtual Reality (VR) Development
VR creates lifelike computer-generated environments, immersing users in the experience. It is one of the technologies with the highest projected potential for growth. It is suggested the VARIC starts with a small scale design, this will allows for exploration of many sectors that make a VR content.
Augmented Reality (AR) Development
In AR, the reality becomes the framework within which objects, images or similar are placed. In layman terms, the computer generated environment/objects are added to the real world. In the area of AR development, many new applications can be used and investigated for promising future capabilities.
Mixed Reality (MR) Development
Mixed reality development is another big area for research. This hybrid technologies make it possible to see virtual objects in the real world and build an experience in which the physical and the digital are practically indistinguishable.
Metaverse
Metaverse is defined as a network of 3D virtual worlds focusing on social connectivity. In simple words, metaverse is a second universe instead of our real world. Individuals can create lifelike worlds by using digital avatars, where they can immerse themselves in digital environments through VR/AR headsets. Similar to a sci-fi movie, the metaverse is already here and is defined as the next iteration of the internet via Web 3.0 which also include early-stage mixed reality with face and eye tracking technology. Several innovations have also been developed in recent times and it is spreading on to more users with awareness moving rapidly.
